If The Shoe Fits – Episode 5 – As The Story Unfolds Pt 1

If The Shoe Fits – Episode 5 – As The Story Unfolds Pt 1

The 1 hour flight from Lagos to Warri seemed like a 5 hour flight, I couldn’t wait to see my mum, she was all I wanted at this time – to hug her and have her hold me in her arms as I cry out all my confusion, fears, anger and frustrations on her bosom, I was emotionally exhausted and it was for this reason I booked the next available flight to Warri right after hanging out with Kunle last night.

Hanging out with Kunle was for me to let off the steam from a bad day but it turned out to be a disaster. First, Chris had called me sometime about 9.00 pm requesting for some documents he needed for a Monday meeting, like work was what I needed to deal with in that moment and then came Kunle heaping so many emotions on me.

Airborne, all I could think of were the things he said to me and it was still so loud in my head like he was right there with me on the plane saying them all over again.

“Hey Adesuwa, can we talk?” He had started, with my head leaning on his shoulder as I enjoyed the vibes of the music from the band at Wine House where we had taken me to.

I raised my head up to face him, adjusting my dress and taking a sip of my Escudo Rojo Red wine. “Wasup, sure we can”.

He hesitated for a few seconds, obviously struggling with what he wanted to say. “Ok, i’m just going to be out with it”, he looked at me and emptied his wine glass.

“You’re making me nervous Kunle, what is it abeg?” I said becoming really anxious.

He became serious “I know this may not be the right time but I doubt there’d ever be a right time. The thing is, I like you Adesuwa, a whole lot. It goes beyond our friendship, which I cherish so much, and I love you beyond the sex too. I want you more than friendship and sex.

I mean, I’ve seen you grow all these years and I’m grateful for how you’ve helped me grow too. I understand your reservations about not wanting to commit to a relationship, but I also need to let you know how I feel. He paused.

“I’ve fallen in love with you babe and It gets more intense every time we are together. I’ve tried to control these feelings for so long, getting into relationships I don’t invest in, but it just won’t go away. It’s starting to hurt me feeling this way and not being able to express myself to you.

I want to marry you Adesuwa, I want to do the rest of my life with you, I want to protect you, make you laugh, provide for you and just love you every way I can. I want us to make babies together…..”.

I didn’t want to hear any of it again, I cut him off, “Kunle please stop”, I was trying really hard to hold back the tears that had welled up in my eyes.

Kunle lost me at making babies, It was all a lot for me to process, so I got up, picked up my bag and left. Fortunately, there were taxis outside, I got in one and booked a flight to Warri for the next morning from my phone. As soon as I got home, I turned off my phone, threw a few things in my weekend bag and opened a bottle of vodka, I didn’t want to think about anything.

Crying mum tells court why she can't get 'out of control' daughter ...

It took everything not to jump on my mum when I saw her at the airport. I had sent her a message early that morning to tell her I would be coming, I added my flight details and for emphasis I added she didn’t need to call and we’d talk when I arrived. She replied saying “I’d be at the airport, I love you Omote”.

I ran into her arms and couldn’t hold back my tears, I broke down right there and she just held me. It was all the comfort I needed. When I was good and done, she gave me her sunglasses and we walked hand in hand to her car.

Adesuwa’s Mum

“Omote, Ovieya, everything will be fine my angel, everything will be just fine” She said, taking her eyes off the road for a few seconds to look at me and squeezing my hands as she drove out of the airport.

“Thank you mummy, I love you so much, thank you for always being in my corner, I don’t know what I’d do without you” I replied squeezing her hand back.

We stopped by at AJ restaurant on Airport Road to buy some food and headed home. I took a shower, changed into one of her kaftans and went to join her in the kitchen where she was dishing out our food.

We were quiet as we both ate and just as she took her last bite, I started to talk. I told her about Kunle and what our relationship had been like in the past few years, I told her about how he had expressed his feelings the night before and his marriage proposal.

For the 5 years Chris had resumed duty at Solar Tech, I never mentioned it to my mum, I didn’t know how she’d react to that but I could no longer keep it from her and in conclusion, I blurted it out “Mummy, Chris Arinze has been at the company where I work for 5 years and recently got promoted to Managing Director, now making him my direct boss” I waited for her response, I didn’t know what to expect.

She sighed deeply, got up and picked up both our plates. I knew it was a lot for her to process and she needed time to put her emotions and thoughts together. I remained on the dining table to give her all the time she needed.

She came back a few minutes later, wiping her hands on a napkin and held out her right hand to get me on my feet leading me to the sofa in her living room.

She looked me straight in the eyes and said “We are going to deal with Chris’s issue first before anything else. I am a bit upset that you kept it away from me for so long, but I respect your decision. I only hope you haven’t roped yourself into any silly affair with him.” She paused, searching my eyes for answers. I shook my head.

She continued, “Good, and I’m proud of you. But I think it is time Esther comes into the picture, she deserves to know the truth. I don’t think this a coincidence, I just see missing pieces of the puzzle coming to you, it’s up to you to fit them right”

She turned to face me and held my hands, “Omote, I know this is hard for you, but this is life and you have to face all that comes with it. Esther is going to be 16 years old and she is not a bastard, I’m proud of the successful woman you have become, I’m proud of the way you have carried yourself all these years. We both want nothing from Chris or his family, we have been able to care for her all these years and I’m glad you can afford to do the most for her financially without begging. But my angel, Esther deserves to know who her father is and Chris needs to know there was truly an outcome of his foolishness 16 years ago. It’s okay if he still wants nothing to do with her but he must know.”

I struggled to accept what my mother was saying, “Mummy, he is married. I don’t want to ruin his marriage, I want nothing to do with him” I said stubbornly.

She held her breath for a while and let it out slowly. “I hear you Adesuwa, I hear you loud and clear, but understand that your intention is not to ruin his marriage. We went to him and his family after you got pregnant, they rejected you and he wasn’t married then. When she turned 3 years old I took Esther to Chris’s mum, she asked us never to come back. You are old enough now Omote, she is old enough too. All I’m asking you to do is let him know and let him see her for himself. What he does after that is up to him, but you need to do your part”

My mind was muddled up, I tried again “What if he rejects Esther to her face, that will make her feel terrible”

She smiled as she wiped the tears that rolled down my eyes “What will make her feel even more terrible is finding out that her father is alive and we have lied to her all these years. Esther is a smart girl, she’s mature and has a heart of gold, just like you my angel, all you need to do is tell her everything that happened. It’s unfortunate the circumstances of her birth, but she’s gold, my angel. Esther is gold and we are all going to get through this, I promise you.” She said as she kissed my forehead and hugged me.

She pulled away and said “When you eventually get together with Kunle, you know you have to tell him about her, right?” She hugged me again, stroking my hair and rocking me.

Just about the same time, I received the notification of a whatsapp message, I opened it, it was from Kunle.

“I just want you to know I’m sorry about last night, but I mean everything I said. I got an offer at work to go to Dubai for a 2 year contract assigned to the company. I’m due for a promotion, so it’s either this move or I become the head of my department, the pay would relatively be the same. I’m seriously contemplating it, maybe it’d be my chance to get away from everything. Maybe it’d help me get over you and find the strength to move on. I really love you Adesuwa and I want you so bad. I have one month to make my decision and get back to the chairman and that decision is dependent on your response. Make me a happy man, I promise you forever no matter the circumstances and I mean it. Please reply when you see this, let me at least know you’re okay

I turned off my phone.

And so the story unfolds and there’s even more. It’s just a few more episodes to the end of this one and it gets more intense. Will Chris really be able to wear the shoes? Will he survive the mess his life is about to become?

As we go into a new week and a new month, I hope the pieces of the puzzle in our lives come to us and come together nicely and accurately to bring that beautiful picture alive.
