Endangered In Heels – Episode 7 – Forever and A Day

Endangered In Heels – Episode 7 – Forever and A Day

“My whole body hurts mehn, like every inch of me, choi.” I said, as I sat on the side of the road to take off my roller skates.

“I still don’t understand why you have chosen this sport of all sports” Sope said as she munched down on her Beef Sharwama.

“You’d be joining me as soon as you drop that baby, I will not body shame you only because you’re pregnant. But if you continue like this, you’d be triple your size before she comes.” I said, as I got up.

Inline roller Skating was my new found sport, since adding almost 7 kg in the past few months, I needed an intervention, so when the head coach of the Stunt riders club in the estate where I lived talked to me about signing up for the training, I took up the challenge. The first 2 weeks of training were crazy, but I loved it. It was fun and just what I was looking for.

I had been away for 3 weeks to Botswana and so had not trained in that time, coming back to do a 3KM lap was a task and my body felt the pain.

“Girl, tell me about it, the rate at which I’ve been craving for rubbish ehn and even more alarming is the way I’ve given in to every craving. Kola doesn’t even help matters, constantly sending food to my house.” she replied.

I laughed, “Kola is terrible influence with food. When is our next doctor’s appointment?, we should ask the doctor to refer us to a nutritionist to draw up a meal plan for you plus work out routines.”

Her bump was growing by the minute. I was determined to be there through the pregnancy as I had envisaged how lonely the journey would be for her. So even when I was away, I got Kola to send food to her regularly and arranged spa and movie dates for her when she wasn’t working. We also had a lot of skype calls.

“Yea, we totally should. What would I do without you Timehin?” She said pulling me into a hug.

“Err, nothing actually” I answered, pulling away gently. I was sweaty and dirty and all I wanted to do was take a bath.

It had been 3 months since I was chosen to head the project and I had carefully picked out members of my team. After discussing with Aunt Rose, my mum and Kola at different points, they had all suggested I put Mr Peters on the team, which had turned out to be a great decision. I remember the day I spoke to him about it.

“Mr Peters, good afternoon, I’d like to discuss something with you. Please let me know when I can come into your office.” I typed a message to him.

“You can come in now, I have a few minutes” His reply came in almost immediately.

I made my way into his office which was just opposite mine. I knocked gently and opened the door without waiting for any response. I wanted to get it over with as quickly as possible.

“Hello Timehin, please take a seat”, he said as he moved files around on his office table.

“Thank you, i’d go straight to the point Mr Peters. It’s about the Women Empowerment Project, I am required to build a team and I have been thinking if maybe you’d like to join us. From the presentation, I realized we have a lot of the same ideas although from different perspectives. If we can work together as partners, I think that would be great for the project.” I said, looking at him straight in the eyes. Left to me, I wouldn’t have considered him as an option.

He looked back at me with a smile on his face, he looked pleased. “Sounds like a good idea, I would really love to work on this project. Thank you for the consideration Timehin, I would get back to you with my answer before the close of work today”

I got up and smoothed my dress, “I’m glad you are giving it a thought, I wasn’t sure you’d be interested, I’d wait to hear from you and I hope it’s in the affirmative.” I said and made my way out of the office.

Just as I packed my bag to close for the day, I received a text message from Mr Peters.

“I have thought about your proposal carefully and I would be joining you on the project, thanks again for the opportunity. Let me know what I need to do in preparation boss *wink emoticon*” I smiled as I read it.

“Lol, that should be partner, not boss *tongue out emoticon*. Welcome to the team, Mr Peters. We’d have our first meeting with the rest of the team tomorrow at 10 am, would that work for you?” I replied.

“10am is perfect”.

2 weeks after that meeting, 3 of us – Mr Peters, Bolanle and I flew to Botswana and set up a center while we recruited a few members of staff from the locality. I was going to be shuttling the 5 countries I was mandated to work with while I stationed one member of the team in each country. It was a huge task for all of us.

“Hey Kola, are you okay? You’re unusually quiet. What’s wrong?” I asked.

We were out having lunch. We had not seen a lot of each other lately with work taking up a lot of our time. I really wanted to spend as much time with him, my mum and Sope before heading out again.

“I have quite a lot on my mind and I haven’t been able to get my thoughts together” he said, as he signaled to the waiter. He ordered a shot of whisky.

“Do you want to talk about it?, you probably should. Cliche as it sounds, a problem shared is half solved” I said, as I ordered for a shot too.

“I was talking to Femi the other night and we touched on the issue of marriage and kids and starting a family. I opened up to him about my fears and to be honest, after that conversation with him, I haven’t quite been myself.

I have had sleepless nights asking myself questions like, what happens with old age, no wife, no kids, no family to call my own. It doesn’t help that lately, going home to an empty house is starting to become unappealing. On the other hand, the thought of finding that person to share my life with scares the shit out of me. Timi, it has to be someone I can trust and love with no reservations.” He said as he emptied his shot glass.

I sighed and leaned against my chair, I suddenly lost my appetite. I was faced with the same thing but I have been able to hide behind work. Aunt Rose had spoken to me again recently when I visited her in the hospital after her last chemotherapy session, she was practically begging me to open up my heart and start to seriously consider starting a family. My mum, even though without any pressure, would always highlight the importance of family and how I should open up my heart to love.

Listening to Kola brought all my fears back to the surface. “I am faced with the same issue Kola, I have asked myself the same questions over and over again. I am in a really good place with my career and I can say I love my life as it is now, but to what end? Who do I pass it on all to, who do I go home to to share my victories with? I wish I could help you here, but I need help myself. But you have all these hook ups going on, isn’t there any one that looks promising?” I asked.

“No mehn, not one, trust me, I have tried to consider each and everyone of them, but there’s something missing. There’s no excitement, no zeal to push further, nothing, even the ones I slept with hold no appeal. Nothing babe, nothing”. He stopped and then looked at me.

“Timi, marry me, I know this is crazy. But you know how I feel about you, you know we have history. I can’t deny the fact that I’m in love with you, I have tried to suppress it and tell myself it’s just sex and friendship. It’s beyond that, the only future I see with kids and a happy family in it is the one with you in the picture. This is not out of desperation, if I was desperate, I’d pick one of those many ladies and call it a day.

But I want something genuine, something real, meaningful and hopeful. A relationship I’d be willing to fight for if things go wrong. This may not be the right time or place and I’m sorry, but please think about it. I love you Timehin, I want to be able to protect you, to provide for you. I want to raise the future with you, our own babies and I mean everything I have just said.” He finished off still looking at me.

I would be lying if I said I was shocked or surprised at what Kola had just said. I didn’t see the ‘marry me’ part coming, but I wasn’t surprised at it too . The truth is I loved Kola as much as I knew he loved me, my only fear was hurting him and hurting myself in the process. It’s not like I was planning to do anything wrong, but what if something happened and I ended breaking up his heart.

I laughed out loud at my own thoughts, I needed to get my thoughts together. “I don’t even know what to say Kola or more like how to say it” He didn’t wait for me to continue.

“Just say it anyhow it comes to you”

“I love you too very much Kay” I only called him Kay when we were in the heat of making love. “I love you, I have loved you from the day I gave my self to you. I only fear that I won’t be woman enough for you, the kind of woman you will want, submissive and all those things that come with being a wife. I fear that that will ruin everything and we’d become like those relationships gone awry” I said in one breath.

“Timi, I am not looking for a slave, I want a woman who is confident enough to be herself at all times. I know enough of  your weaknesses, the things that piss you off , I know how you don’t like to cook, I know how you hate domestic chores, I know how you like your shoes arranged in color hues, I know you like the temperature of the AC at 25 degrees. We may get in each other’s way but we’d grow through it. I am willing to learn and unlearn Timi and that is all i need from you too. We can make it work, I just want to be with you for the rest of my life.” He said, his eyes desperately searching mine.

I felt like a heavy weight had been lifted off me, I could see all the walls crash down, my heart melted completely. I felt free and happy, genuinely happy. “Where’s my rock niccur, where’s my fucking rock?”

The smile on his face was huge, he looked like his heart was going to burst “Expect the hugest one, nothing but the best for you.” He reached for my hands, “Thank you Timehin Ayole, thank you for this day, I promise you forever and a day from this moment.”

I smiled and leaned in to give him a kiss. We finished off our already cold lunch and headed back to my house. All I wanted to do was make love to Kola and that was exactly what we did, it was our best sex yet. The number of times I called him Kay that afternoon would go down in history as the most, as he hit every right spot in my body.

I had a dinner meeting later that evening with Mr Peters and members of the board, to give them a progress report on the project and our plans for the next phase. Mr Peters had been hands on since we started and for the first time, I could admit to having a great work relationship with him. Mrs Anele wasn’t quite strong enough with all the treatment, but the good thing was there was great hope for full recovery and she was always in very high spirits.

I freshened up and got dressed, as Kola also got ready to go and see Tola’s husband, Femi who was leaving the country that night. We had agreed to keep our plans secret for now while we spent more time praying and planning for the new promising future ahead of us. I couldn’t wait to share with my mum though. I can’t remember the last time I felt so happy.
