Designer Focus – Avante Garde Footwear Designs That Are Jan Taminiau

When Beyonce dropped the 4 album back in 2011, she wore these outlandish shoes that mere mortals will only ever imagine for the album cover and campaign shoot. I stumbled upon the picture again recently and decided to find out more about the shoes. Turns out to be the creation of a dutch designer – JAN TAMINIAU. Taminiau is known for his love for traditional production techniques, antique materials, the search for the right shape and the penchant for aesthetics. His work has a refined, conceptual undertone yet never loses sight of the elegant, feminine and wearable form. I read in an article where he was quoted saying, “I create for the woman of my dreams, for her I produce my own fabrics, for her I discover new forms, techniques and research new materials. All to give women back the art of showing themselves, and thereby proving that romance, attraction, elegance and style still have an important role to play in today’s fashion.” See some more of his designs here     I can rock a few pairs here however avante garde they are. It’s no surprise Lady Gaga is big on this one. Would you invest in any of these? I think i will, just because #collections Peace, love and go gaga Xoxo Jay  ... read more

Top Shoe Styles On Sales From New Look For N10,000 and Under.

Not many people may know or have heard about the brand New Look, but if you know, you certainly know. I have worn the brand since my days in University and when i need some high street love that is friendly to my pocket, i still look to them. With as little (or as much) as N10,000, you can have a pair too. For those who don’t know New Look is a South African-owned British global fashion retailer, founded in 1969, with a chain of high street shops all around the world. Over the years, i have mastered (in every sense of the word) the art of picking their best pieces. I have retailed their shoes too and so can tell a bad choice almost as soon as i see it. I’d always consider them as one of my favorite go to high street brands when my budget would not let me splurge and i’m in need of some retail therapy… What girl doesn’t always need one? RELATED POST: SHOE THRIFTING IN THE HEART OF LAGOS WITH NIMIDE I have shoes from New Look that have lasted me 6 years with little or no damages. And i have been unlucky to have copped some that didn’t last more than a few wears. But now i know the difference and have a smarter way of choosing them and so i no longer fall prey to bad choices. Best part is they go on sale every now and then and you can catch sales on there for up to 70% off sometimes. And because it’s Tuesday and it’s Shoes day, i will be sharing some... read more
Three Generations Of Creative Genii – The Rene Caovilla Brand

Three Generations Of Creative Genii – The Rene Caovilla Brand

I remember so clearly the first pair of Rene Caovilla shoes i ever came across online. They were from Net-A-Porter, i was, as always, feeding my eyes on their new arrivals when these mules jumped at me. It screamed everything Jay’s style. They weren’t too loud and so in your face but you couldn’t help but notice them.   It didn’t take more than a second to click on the brand name and i was let into the world of Rene Caovilla – Lots of Precious stones, Court style, Sling backs, Mules, Flats and the signature silver sparkly outsoles. Of course i was sold in my heart and nothing could stop me from looking at shoe after shoe, with the next pair was something that made me want to see the next. I have not for one time been bored with any of their designs, because every pair comes with just another WOW element. Knowing the creative genius behind the brand became priority and i didn’t stop digging till i was satisfied with the all the information i got. Three generations of the Caovilla family have run the brand from 1923 till date. It all started with the visionary fore father Edoardo Caovilla who opened a workshop to handcraft luxury shoes in Venice.  In the 50s, his son René established the brand and having being born and brought up in aristocratic Venice, in the 60s,  he started to conceive, and then designed and created the iconic pieces of the line: the “Snake” sandals, which is the trademark of the label,  and the thong sandals embellished with pearls. Rene’s Son, named after his grand father, the 3rd generation of... read more

From Imagination To Paper and On Your Feet: It All starts With A Sketch!!!

In recent times i have been trying my hands on shoe sketching. I would say i generally suck when it comes to drawing, so i’ve had to go back to the basics. I’m not perfect yet, it doesn’t necessarily have to be perfect, but there’s an amazing feeling that comes with being able to interpret those ideas in your head on paper with a sketch. RELATED POST: THE AMAZING ARTWORK OF SOPHIA WEBSTER For every time i go into a stationery store now, i am collecting colored pencils and sketch pads and drawing pencils, it’s my new obsession. Of course I’ve had to look up to some of my favorite footwear designers for inspiration and guidance and it’s great to see that many of these shoes start with a sketch. You own it when you can add this and take that out and adjust this till you get just what it is you’re looking to create. Manolo Blahnik by far has the most collection of sketches and this book Manolo Blahnik Drawings is up on my next “To Buy” list. (Hint Hint – Christmas never can come too early) From Giuseppe Zanotti to Paul Andrew, Blahnik and Jimmy Choo, here are a few of the sketches from which their shoes came to life.         And some more…               Whether they do it themselves or pay people to do it for them, seeing these designs on paper brings some measure of excitment. Manolo Blahnik is by far the God Father of soles, his originality and creativity cannot be rivaled. Let me go back... read more

Bride To Be On A Budget? Create Your Own Fairy Tale.

We see all these pictures of brides in their $1,000 plus shoes, sometimes 2 to 3 pairs, one for every outfit totaling almost $3,000 to $4,000 on the whole. Not everyone has that fairy tale lifestyle, not everyone is there yet! So yea, we have brides to be on a budget (Sometimes a very strict one), who love their shoes and want to get the best their money can buy. If you’re one of them or know one of them, this post is certainly for you. With the current exchange rate of about N370 to 1$ and N474 to a Pound, it’s almost discouraging to want to buy anything. I have been able to come up with shoes from between N10,000 to N100,000 from a few very good brands. In this post, there’s something for everyone. From Kurt Geiger to Badgley Mischka, Ted Baker, MENBUR and Kate Spade, check out these affordable beauties for your special day. Classic Shoes To Build Your Luxury Collection.

Classic Shoes To Build Your Luxury Collection.

I was chatting with a friend yesterday and she mentioned she was looking into investing in a few luxury shoes but didn’t know which ones to look out for. It’d be a shame to part with hundreds or even thousands of dollars for shoes you would end up not wearing. After loads and loads of reviews and experiences, here are a few classic shoes you cannot go wrong with. I like that they are timeless and so would work with every season year in year out. You can build your luxury collection with these ones and many if not all of them are wide feet friendly. The Valentino Rockstud Pumps – Comes in a wide variety of heel heights, colors and textures and there’s something for EVERYONE. It’s top on my list and costs from $950 upwards at Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom and Net A Porter.     Yves Saint Laurent Tribute Sandals – Are another timeless pair that comes with a mid heel option. Also in a wide variety of colors and textures, they are suitable for almost any outfit choice. They cost about $925 at Neiman Marcus     Christian Louboutin Pigalle Pumps – A lot of people hear Loboutin and automatically attach it to pain. No, in recent times, there have been a lot of comfortable, wide feet friendly Louboutin shoes and these Pigalle Pumps are one of them. Also spotting an 85MM heel option for those that find the 120MM too high. It costs about $550 upwards. Salvatore Ferragamo Varina Flats – Would never go out fashion. If you’re team no heels, these are the shoes for you.... read more
Outside My Obsession With Shoes, These Are My Other Favorite Things!!!

Outside My Obsession With Shoes, These Are My Other Favorite Things!!!

I have been accused of being selfish on the blog because all i talk about is shoes… but that’s what happens when you’re obsessed…Lol! So today, i’d shift my focus away from shoes for a minute. If you’ve wondered what else it is that gets my attention outside shoes, then they’d be…   Dresses – I like that they are a one piece and very feminine, i have a few favorite styles for my body type and would fill my future closet with 70% dresses. Jeans Trousers – Bring them on in anyway, as long as they have a good fit, i’m in. Sunglasses – I like them really dramatic and detailed.. Bags – Classic handbags are my favorite, i would invest in classic ones but won’t necessarily go over board. In that particular order, every other thing considered a fashion accessory is not exactly so important as long as i have a decent amount of them as i need them. Anyway, today will be dedicated to BAGS. 70% of the non shoe lovers i have met are obsessed with their bags, 85% of the shoe lovers i have met have bags as their second obsession. I won’t really go out of my way to ogle bags (save for these days when i’m styling a client), but i can’t deny they are a real fashion statement. For the purpose of this post, i have come up with a collection of bags from luxury brands that will legit make my wish list (Here’s hoping Santa is reading this post). Luxury hand bags are an investment piece, i mean the fact that... read more

Beauty, Brains and Valentinos – It’s CNN’s Isha Sesay!!!

Except there’s a story rocking the world, like the death of Michael Jackson, you’d most likely not catch me watching CNN. In the past few years, my husband has kind of rubbed off on me and i find myself tuning in to 401 once or twice a month…Lol! One of the few people i like and would stay tuned anytime i find them on is French born Sierra Leonan Isha Sesay, Anchor and correspondent for CNN International. From her smile to her charisma and high level of intelligence, i find myself glued when she’s on air. Memorable moments with her on TV (Yea they are memorable) for me are her interviews with Actor Djimon Hounsou, Super Model Alek wek and Liberian president, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. And then in 2014, how she was really into the #Bringbackourgirls campaign when the Chibok girls were kidnapped. I remember also catching a few moments of her coverage from South Africa following the death of Nelson Mandela. Oooh and when she joined Michelle Obama in Liberia and Morocco for an upcoming CNN Films, “We Will Rise: Michelle Obama’s Mission to Educated Girls Around the World.” The film, with Meryl Streep and Freida Pinto, focuses on girls overcoming incredible challenges to achieve an education. I just over all love how passionate she is about what she does. Isha is quite the conservative dresser and so is her life. Outside work, she’s a very private person and you can hardly find anything about her life flying around, but i dug, i dug into her wardrobe… lol! Didn’t find much to be honest but enough to share with you her shoe... read more

Fall 2017: The Jennifer Lopez X Giuseppe Zanotti Collaboration

Hey guys, thank God it’s Friday, No? Well, a big yes from this side especially as i get to sleep in longer tomorrow. Anyway, i turned on my computer to do a post on shoe sketches, but i got a hint from shoesphere about the JLo X Zanotti collaboration and i had to quickly share. Yup, sexy actor, singer and performer Jennifer Lopez has just dropped her Fall 2017 collection with Giuseppe Zanotti. She’s been a fan and has been known to collect a lot of his designs so it’s not really a surprise that they’re at it. It’s a second collaboration as there was a Spring collection earlier in the year. Every pair of shoe started with a sketch, be it by the designer or a designing team, it goes from imagination to paper and then reality and this is no exception. This sketch below Gave life to this   There are 4 styles from the fall collection which are expected to go on retail in August. Continue below   And from the spring collection, they had these: None of the styles jump at me so much, looks to me like a repetition of what we are used to. But hey, they must be smiling to the bank as these shoes have been reported to be sold out at Luxury retail outlets Neiman Marcus and Saks5thAvenue with their price tags between $800 and $2,795 from both collections. I hope to see more va va voom in future collaborations. Which of these are your favorites? Peace, Love and More Shoes Xoxo... read more

Diary Of A Shoe Lover – Season 2, Episode 8- This is Where The Story Ends…

It’s been an amazing 2 seasons in this mini series “The Diary Of A Shoe Lover”. I trust you guys have enjoyed the story so far. What started out to be the story of a girl who was in love with shoes and would clean her bank account dry to get her favorite pair, grew into the lives, times and experiences of three women and their loved ones. I enjoyed writing every episode and i like how i was able to get lost in each character. Your favorite series will come to an end with this episode and i hope you’ve learned a few lessons or can relate to some of the experiences. Enjoy and share your thoughts. Xoxo, Jay. Read Episode 7 Here The store launch was a massive success, everyone came out in their numbers to support us. Family, friends, even my ex colleagues and bosses were there. It had been the busiest 2 months of my entire life, like literally. From the last 3 events of Aishat’s wedding to my vacation to Hawaii and back to get ready for the store opening and then my surprise baby shower, which wasn’t so much a surprise, as i knew it was coming. The days and weeks past had been full of activities. Now was the time i needed to really rest. I was due to have my babies in 8 weeks and the gynecologist we were seeing, as Hakeem never allowed me go for any appointment without him, had hinted i’d most likely not carry the pregnancy to the full term of 40 weeks because it was a multiple... read more
Designer Focus: Around The World With Charlotte Olympia.

Designer Focus: Around The World With Charlotte Olympia.

On my top 10 favorite footwear designers list, Charlotte Olympia would most likely make top 5. There’s something about her designs that jumps at me. Mostly how she uses themes as inspiration and interprets them well with bright colors, distinct details and cheeky designs, that’s what creativity is all about, no?. Over the years, she’s had so many collections and this post is inspired by something she did about 3years ago. She introduced a capsule collection of city inspired T Bar Peep toe sandals called “Around The World”. Each detailed pair representing a city where a Charlotte Olympia store stands. You can find a feather topped show girl on the Las Vegas pair   A chic Queen’s guard on the London pair A golden dress clad Mae West for Beverly Hills Anna May Wong adorns the Hong Kong pair An intrinsically embroidered purple and gold Thai design adorns the Bangkok pair There’s the Coconut Tree representing the most recent store in Dubai A Pom Pom bearing Cheer Leader gives credit to the South Coast Plaza The workings of the statue of Liberty is on the New York pair And a red flamingo represents Miami With each pair made of embroidery, satin, precious stones and leather; these 9 cities are very well represented in the collection. From Zodiac signs to Hollywood glam, the hello kitty, dolly collection, Halloween and even Archie, the comic inspired designs, Charlotte Olympia Dellal is a business savvy entrepreneur and a creative genius.     She’d be my go to brand if I had a themed or costume party. Diary Of A SHoe Lover S2 Episode 7 – In His Time He Makes All Things Beautiful!!

Read Episode 6 here “Go Ai, go Ai, go Ai” I screamed at the top of my voice, attempting to compete with the booming sounds from the Bangs and Olusfen speakers in my living room. Wizkid’s Daddy Yo was playing and Aishat was giving us out of this world steps. It felt like our University years again. How I missed those days so much, when all we worried about were boys, making good grades and wearing the best clothes. *sigh* Tonight it was all about Aishat, her journey to being Mrs Timehin Bob Egbe was in full gear and we were going all into it. The family introduction had taken place about 2months after the proposal. We had all gone to the north, to Kano, Aishat’s home town. You would never believe the kind of wealth she was born into. Her father’s mansion was like a city on its own. I mean it was big enough to comfortably accommodate all of us that went with her. It was so much fun and we stayed a few extra days to see enough of the city before we headed back to Lagos. Now this was part two, her bridal shower, almost another 2months after the introduction. The traditional marriage was coming up in the next 2 weeks and the pre-wedding dinner and finally the white wedding the week after. The running around had been such a task. With Ivie nursing Osagie, I was left to do most of the work. She came back to Nigeria as soon as he clocked 3months, so she had missed the introduction. We had been planning... read more

Diary Of A Shoe Lover – Season 2, Episode 6 – Ugly Revelations And A Baby???

Read Episode 5 Here “Finally, the third musketeer is getting married”, my oldest brother Femi said. Me and my two brothers had gone out to lunch. My immediate older brother Dayo had just come back from Canada. He had been away for almost 2years on a course. It was the first time in over 10years that it would be just the 3 of us together alone, no parents, no significant others, no friends. Just us, it felt really good. I didn’t realize how much time had taken its toll on our sibling relationship. Brother Femi, although many years older had to be the coolest brother in the whole world and despite the drama that had come with him over the years, I still loved him deeply. Dayo and I were closer as were also closer in age. He was and is the ultimate Big brother, he’s the one person that knows practically everything about me, and including the first day I had sex. That was the one person I trusted to keep my secrets. 2years away, even though we chatted almost every day and i had missed him silly. “Who did Aishat finally commit to o, that’s how that girl didn’t marry me” Dayo said, digging into his Ila Alasepo. “You this unserious human being, you guys would never have worked out” I said in reply. “You better look for wife elsewhere” Brother Femi put in. “But seriously, who’s the lucky guy?” Dayo asked “It’s one Timehin guy o, she met him when she went to Canada after she had Khameel.” I said in reply. “Oh Ok, when I... read more

It’s Tuessay ShoesDay And Rihanna Has My Heart, Forever!!!

Rihanna: Born 20 February 1988 in Barbados Jay: Born 30 April 1988 in Lagos, Nigeria About 60 days apart, she came out earlier to work my spirit animal. Rihanna is a lot in personality what I’d most likely be under different circumstances. I love her, period!!! Back to why I’m here, everyone has been buzzing about her latest collaboration with the legend Manolo Blahnik and me I’m just here sipping tea trying to digest the whole “shoetiation”. Last year, I thought they killed it together with the launch of the Denim collection that had Jennifer Lopez rocking a pair in her music video. I saw this new collection and I’m totally taken. These pieces are in a class of their own. Nude, PVC and precious stones in 3 varying styles. This is what happens when 2 artists come together, #Issacreativeexplosion. EVERY woman would want a pair of one of these, tell me why not, call them over rated and I’d show you a hater… This post should make you think again. OMG, drool with me, but I have to go now.
